UNC CHARLOTTE HOLDS
OFF LATE
FURMAN RALLY, WINS 6-4
GREENVILLE -- Brad Lamm went 2-for-4
with three RBI and John Maine pitched six innings of two-hit ball to lift visiting
UNC Charlotte to a 6-4 win over Furman Tuesday afternoon at Furman Stadium.
Lamm, a sophomore shortstop, sparked a four-run 49er fourth with a three-run
home run to left off Paladin starter Coogie Freedman (0-1) to help stake UNC
Charlotte to a 4-0 lead.
Brad Erwinıs solo home run off Furman reliever Mike Dugan made it 5-0 in the
fifth, and the 49ers extended their lead to 6-0 on George Sandelıs RBI singe
in the sixth.
Furman rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth to make it 6-2 following an
RBI groundout by Adam Etherington and a bases loaded walk by Cole Hubka.
Paladin first baseman Dominic Frankey tripled off 49er reliever Jacob Chaney
to lead off the ninth and scored on an RBI single by Jeff Adkisson to slice
the lead to 6-3. Adkisson later scored on a sacrifice fly by Derek Norman to
make it 6-4, but 49er reliever Brannon Hamby halted Furmanıs rally and recorded
the save by getting Chris Valdes on a groundout to end the game.
³We had an opportunity to score in the second with runners of first and second
and nobody out and we got nothing, and then we didnıt get another hit until
the seventh,² said Furman head coach Ron Smith. ³We didnıt do a very good job
of making adjustments to their pitcher (Maine), who really threw well, but Iım
pleased that we battled back in the eighth and ninth inning. The story, though,
is we pitched behind. Thatıs tough, and they took advantage of it.²
Maine (1-0) struck out three and walked two in posting his first win of the
season.
The victory evened UNC Charlotteıs season record at 1-1 while Furman dropped
to 3-1 on the young campaign.
Furman returns to action on Friday when it hosts Kentucky in a 3:00 p.m. game
at Furman Stadium.
