Charleston Southern Whips Furman, 10-4

Charleston, SC -- The struggling Buccaneers of Charleston Southern (7-17) broke open a close game with a five-run fourth inning and went on to a 10-4 victory over visiting Furman University (17-11) Tuesday afternoon.

Senior catcher Chris Kellett had four hits, while shortstop Richard Gomersall and centerfeilder Shayne New tallied three hits each to pace the Bucs' 15-hit attack.

CSU sent 10 men to the plate in the decisive fourth, sending losing pitcher Jon Stallsmith to the dugout without retiring a batter in the inning. The Bucs used four hits, a Furman error, and three hit batsmen to plate the five runs. Gomersall and Kellett each had run-scoring singles in the inning.

CSU junior left-hander Matt Coenen (2-4) went five innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and striking out five. Patrick Boucher pitched the final four innings, allowing an earned run on four hits with five strikeouts.

All total, four Furman pitchers hit five CSU batters, and the Paladins committed two costly errors that allowed runs to score. The Paladins were led offensively by third baseman Derek Norman, who had three hits and three RBI. Shortstop Dannty Rueckel had two of Furman's eight hits.

Furman returns to Southern Conference action in a weekend series at Georgia Southern. Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
