FURMAN DEFEATS THE CITADEL 6-4

Charleston, S.C.-- Senior left-hander Toby David pitched his fourth complete game of the season to lead Furman past The Citadel, 6-4, in Southern Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon in Riley Park.

The Citadel (30-20, 16-8 SoCon) scratched only four runs across against the crafty left-hander. The Bulldogs plated two runs in the second when senior rightfielder Stuart Jordan was hit by a pitch and scored on a RBI double by sophomore catcher Jason Randall. Randall then scored on a RBI single by second baseman Orlando Garcia. The Bulldogs posted solo home runs in the third and ninth innings as senior first baseman Philip Hartig hit one in the third and Randall belted one in the ninth.

Furman (26-20, 15-11 SoCon) touched up Bulldog starter Dallas McPherson for five runs in the second inning, which proved to be enough for the win. The frame was highlighted with RBI doubles by Richie Dean, Adam Etherington, and Brandon Barrett. Justin Maderer added a RBI single in the frame to account for all five runs. The Paladins added another in the fifth when Danny Rueckel doubled home Chris Valdes.

David improved to 8-3 on the season, while McPherson fell to 4-5. Freshman reliever Paul Williams pitched 7.1 innings in relief, struck out three and allowed only one run in the longest outing of his career.

The Bulldogs return to action Friday, May 4th against UNC Greensboro in Greensboro at 7:00 pm. The Paladins play UNC Asheville at 7:00 pm in Greenville.
