FURMAN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST KEYDETS
Furman's Danny Rueckel hits three-home runs in game 2 victory
LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore Danny Rueckel blasted three home runs, and pitched
in relief earning the win, to rally Furman (7-17-1, 3-5-1) to an 8-7 win and
a split of Sunday's Southern Conference doubleheader aganist VMI (8-12, 5-10).
In game one, VMI first baseman Chris Catanzaro went 3-for-4 with two home
runs and three RBI's to lead VMI to an 10-7 victory.
Keydet starting pitcher Matt Poulos earned his second win of the season going
five innings and allowing only one run and one hit striking out three and walking
nine. Ian Ostlund picked up his second save on the season pitching the last
three innings to seal the victory. Furman starter Rusty Putnam suffered the
loss going six innings and allowing ten hits and six runs.
In game two, VMI jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning thanks to a pair of one run singles by Chris Catanzaro and Michael Goldman and a one run double by shortstop Steven Johnson. In the top of the second Rueckel's solo hhomer decreased the Keydet lead to threFurman continued to battle in the third scoring 2 runs as Cjris Valdes hit a RBI double and later scored. The Keydets would increase their lead to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning after an Ed Pearson single to center scoring Ryan Colvin from second base. Furman would comeback to take the lead 8-7 courtesy of a four run fifth that was keyed by a two-run home run by Rueckel.
Rueckel (1-1) posted the win in game two for the Paladins and Rob Purvis earned
his fourth save of the season. VMI's Ostlund took the loss (3-2).
Next, Furman will play at home on Wednesday, March 22 against Georgia State at 3:00 p.m.
