UNC Charlotte Scores Five Runs in the Fifth, Defeats Furman, 13-2
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After getting off to a slow start, UNC Charlotte's Brion
Treadway settled down to record eight strikeouts and pitch the 49ers to a 13-2
victory over Furman Tuesday afternoon at Phillips Field. Treadway pitched seven
innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs.
Furman (5-15-1) put the first run of the game on the board in the
top of the second, when Tommy John came in from third on a Brandon Barrett sacrifice
fly.
UNC Charlotte (14-5) answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half
of the inning. Brad Erwin advanced home for the first of his three runs on a
balk from the Paladins' Alex Vogel. Mike Taylor also made his way around in
the second, scoring on an Alex Derhak RBI double.
The 49ers scored three more in the fifth inning. Eric Shanks got things
started with a RBI single to push Bradley Smith across the plate. Erwin and
Daryl Clark both scored later in the inning on Thomas Hopkins' single to right
field.
Furman cut the Niners' lead to 5-2 with their second run of the game
in the top of the sixth. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Ryan Presnell
scored on a wild pitch.
Brian Beaumier replaced Vogel in the sixth, but the pitching change
didn't help Furman's situation. Beaumier struggled through the inning, giving
up five hits and two walks for five runs. Smith's double drove in Brian Bowman
and Brad Lamm to make the score 7-1. Smith made his way around as well, scoring
on Clark single. Erwin and Taylor also scored in the sixth, reaching home on
hits from Kirby Southerland and Derhak, respectively.
UNC Charlotte capped their scoring with three more runs in the bottom
of the seventh. Smith scored for the third time of the afternoon on Erwin's
double to right. Erwin was replaced by pinch runner Nick Blackmon, who came
home with Clark on a Taylor single.
Treadway improves to 5-1 on the season as he scattered three hits
and allowed two runs over seven innings. The Paladins' Vogel took the loss.
He falls to 0-1 for the year.
The Niners will be at home the rest of the week, hosting N.C. A&T Wednesday at 6:00. This weekend, they welcome fifth-ranked Houston for a three game series that begins Friday at 6:00. It will be the Conference USA opener for both schools.
