FURMAN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH
HIGH POINT IN SEASON OPENER
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman opened its baseball season Saturday with a doubleheader split with High Point, posting a 2-0 shutout win in the first game before falling 4-1 in game two.
In the opener, Paladin junior lefthander
Toby David (1-0) scattered three hits over five innings to pace Furman to the
win. Teammates Brian Corcoran and Rob Purvis followed David with two innings
of no-hit ball to complete the shutout. Justin Maderer and Cole Hubka, meanwhile,
delivered RBI hits off High Point starter Chris Chandler (0-1) to account for
both Paladin runs.
In game two, High Pointıs John Cavanaugh
went 3-for-4 with an RBI and stole two bases to lead the Panthers to a 4-1 victory
and doubleheader split. High Pointıs Buddy Webb opened the scoring with a solo
home run off Furman starter Corey Etheridge (0-1) in the first inning, and the
Panthers added two more runs in the fifth on RBI singles by Jed Thomas and Cavanaugh
to take a 3-0 lead. Furman answered with its only run of the game in the bottom
of the fifth with an RBI double by Cole Hubka off Panthersı starter and winner
David White (1-0).
Furman and High Point complete the three-game weekend series on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. game.
