FURMAN BASEBALL SPLITS WITH GEORGIA SOUTHERN
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Georgia Southernıs John Durik went 5-for-8 in Saturdayıs
doubleheader against Furman baseball (18-22-1). In game one, he blasted two
homers and scored three runs.
Georgia Southern (25-17) took a one run lead in the first on Durikıs solo
homer. Furman responded in the bottom of the inning as James Bright reached
on a double and was scored by Chris Valdes. In the top of the third, Georgia
Southern took a two run lead. Durik led off the inning with a solo home run,
and Matt Easterday reached on a single and scored on Matt Herring sacrifice
fly. Furman tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the inning when Clint Hill
reached on a single and later scored on Chris Valdesı two-run homer.
Georgia Southern produced three additional runs in the seventh on two hits
and a Paladin error to take a 6-3 lead. The Paladins attempted a comeback in
the bottom of the inning but only managed one run on three singles. Furman took
the lead in the bottom of the eighth scoring four runs on four hits. The Eagles
were held scoreless in the top of the ninth for a 8-6 Furman victory.
In game two, Georgia Southern took a one run lead in the third as Dustin Langley
reached on a double and later scored on a filederıs choice. The Eagles posted
three more runs in the fifth on Easterdayıs three-run homer. The Paladins scored
on run in the botom of th sixth on Ryan Richettiıs solo home run closing the
gap to only three runs. In the ninth, Furman continued its comeback attempt
when pinch hitter Jordan Riley hit a two-run homer. However, the Paladins could
not score again in the inning and fell 4-3.
Furmanıs Rusty Putnam (3-7) earned the win in game one, while Georgia Southernıs
Daniel Wheeler (5-3) sufferred the loss. In game two, Paladin Toby David (1-4)
took the loss and David Ray (8-2) got the win.
Furman and Georgia Southern will complete the Southern Conference series tommorrow at 1:00 p.m at Furman Stadium.
