FURMAN SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER
WITH EASTERN KENTUCKY
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman baseball (3-8) split a doubleheader with Eastern
Kentucky (1-4) on Saturday dropping game one to the Colonels 17-2 before winning
the second 7-6.
In game one, the Paladins earned nine hits including a triple by junior Chris
Valdes, but were only able to produce two runs. Both Furman runs came in the
bottom of the second as the Paladins took an early 2-0 lead. An RBI single by
junior Will Daugs scored sophomore Jeff Mackey, who reached on a single. Daugs
later scored on an Eastern Kentucky error. In the fourth, an RBI double by Lee
Chapman cut the Paladin lead to one. The Colonelıs seven run fifth inning, highlighted
by Adam Basilıs three run homer, gave the team a 8-2 lead over Furman. Nine
runs on six hits in the ninth inning, including a two run homer by Chapman,
increased the final score to 17-2.
Eastern Kentucky started game two by taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first
as runs scored on a two RBI single by Lee Chapman and a wild pitch. Furman answered
with four runs on three hits and two Eastern Kentucky errors in the bottom of
the inning. Furman scattered three additional runs across four innings with
a solo home run by junior Chris Valdes in the fifth. Eastern Kentucky also earned
three more runs, but could not top the Paladinsı lead.
Colonel Chip Albright (1-1) posted the win in game one, and Paladin Brian Corcoran (0-1) took the loss. Furmanıs Corey Etheridge (1-3) earned the win in game two, while Eastern Kentuckyıs Scott Santa (0-1) suffered the loss. Furman returns to action Sunday at noon for the final game of the weekend series against Eastern Kentucky.
