FURMAN BASEBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER TO THE CITADEL 12-5, 12-4

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Citadelıs Philip Hartig and Dallas McPherson produced multiple home runs to lead the Bulldogs to a sweep of the Furman baseball team (21-26-1, 13-11-1 SoCon) in Saturdayıs doubleheader at Furman Baseball Stadium. Hartig produced three two-run home runs in the two-game matchup, and McPherson posted a two-run home run and the win in the second contest.

In game one, The Citadel (33-17, 20-6 SoCon) took an early 2-0 lead in the first on a two-RBI triple by Stuart Jordan. Furmanıs Ryan Presnell produced a three-run homer in the bottom of the first to give the Paladins an one-run advantage. The Bulldogs tied the game at 3-3 in the third and then took the 4-3 lead on David Griffinıs solo home run in the fourth. The Paladins answered in the bottom of the fourth after scoring one run on James Brightıs RBI single. The battle for the lead continued in the fifth when The Citadelıs Jordan homered, but the Paladins tied the game again when Chris Valdes scored on a double play. The Bulldogs finally took a solid 8-5 lead in the seventh on Tavy Smallsı RBI double and a two-run home run by Hartig. The Citadel sealed the 12-5 victory in the top of the ninth after scoring four runs on Hartigıs two-run homer, Jay Morganıs double, and Matt Deanıs single.

The Citadelıs Ron Colvard (10-2) pitched a complete game and posted the win. Furmanıs Corey Etheridge (5-7) took the loss.

In game two, the Bulldogs took a first inning lead with a two-run homer by Hartig. Furman produced one run in the second on Brandon Barrettıs RBI single. The Citadel scored an additional run in the third on Jordanıs RBI single. The Citadelıs Morgan posted a three-run home run in the fourth to give the Bulldogs a 7-1 advantage. The Paladins sliced the Bulldog lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth when Cole Hubka and Danny Rueckel scored an error. The Citadel posted a run in the sixth on Morganıs RBI double. McPherson produced a two-run homer in the seventh to give The Citadel a 10-3 advantage. Furman produced one run in the eighth, scoring Rueckel on an error. The Bulldogs posted two final runs in the ninth on a Morganıs RBI single and a home run by Smalls.

The Citadelıs McPherson pitched five innings to earn the win. Tom Mastny (4-4) took the loss for Furman.
