FURMAN BASEBALL DROPS SERIES
FINALE 14-3 TO APPALACHIAN STATE
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Mountaineer Scotty Ofsanko belted a three-run home run
and Robbie Huffstetler added a two-run shot to highlight a seven-run fifth inning
to lead Appalachian State to a 14-3 win over Furman Sunday afternoon at Furman
Baseball Stadium.
With the victory Appalachian State (6-25-1, 5-9 SoCon) avoided a three-game
series sweep by Furman (13-17-1, 8-6-1 SoCon), which took both games in Saturday¹s
doubleheader. The loss snapped the Paladins¹ seven-game winning streak, the
program¹s longest since 1971.
Leading 2-0 , the Mountaineers blew the game open in the fifth with Ofsanko¹s
and Huffstetler¹s home runs off Paladin reliever Alex Vogel. After Furman cut
the lead to 9-3, Appalachian State answered with five runs in eighth highlighted
by a pair of home runs by Chris Behne and Luke Little and an RBI single by Ben
Wellborn.
Appalachian State¹s Rodney Lemonds (1-4) earned his frist win of the season,
pitching a complete game and surrendering six hits. Furman¹s Rusty Putnam (2-6)
took the losss after giving up seven hits in four and one-third innings.
The Mountaineers pounded out 16 hits in the contest, including four home runs.
Appalachian entered the game with only seven home runs on the season.
Furman plays an exhibition game against the AA Greenville Braves in a 7:00 game Tuesday at Municipal Stadium. The Paladins then travel on Wednesday to take on nationally ranked Clemson in a 7:15 p.m. contest at Tiger Field.
