INTRODUCTION TO THEATRE AND DRAMA

The Bedford Introduction to Drama (5th edition) by Lee A. Jacobus

Policies:         Class attendance is required.  Attendance at all exams, including the final, is mandatory.  More than 5 unexcused absences will result in a deduction of 5 points for each additional absence.  In extreme cases, university attendance policies (see FU Catalog p 40) will be enforced.

Attendance is required at a performance of either Furman Theatre Department’s fall production of Copenhagen OR The Glass Menagerie.  A 4 - 6 page typed review will be due shortly after the show closes.

Work in the Production Lab/Creative Project area is also required.

Learning Objectives:
The primary objective of this course is to acquaint the student with the major stylistic periods in dramatic history with emphasis on the principal playwrights and plays.  The student should derive a foundation for more discriminating and discerning playgoing through analysis of major dramatic forms and masterworks and consideration of the methods and techniques of the principal theatre artists and crafts people.  The student is also given the opportunity to see live theatre by attending one performance at the Furman Playhouse.
