Preparation for Quiz (Thursday, October 10, 2013)

 

1.  Known listening

 

For the songs in the Schloss textÕs Listening Guides (and on Box) for Chapters 1-4, be prepared to identify:
artist, title, date of release (within 5 years), and approximately what location in the song was played (verse, chorus, etc).

 

 

2.  Unknown listening

 

Be prepared to describe what you perceive to be important musical characteristics in an unknown excerpt which is played. 
Things you might consider: instrumentation, vocal style, lyrics, rhythm/beat, style, form, etc. 
Based on your description, suggest who might have recorded the excerpt.

 

 

3.  People, terms, and concepts.

 

After studying the online Lecture Outlines (see Chapter links on the Schloss text's online resources page), and
terms in bold print in the Schloss text,
be able to answer true/false, multiple-choice, and fill-in-the-blank questions
concerning major people, terms and concepts covered so far in class.

 

 

4.  Short essay

 

Prepare responses to both of the questions below; you will be asked to respond to one of them. 
Actual quiz questions may be more focused on individual songs or artists. 
In your preparation, you may consult outside sources and discuss with other members of the class.
During the test you may refer to your written notes, but not to texts or online resources.

 

On the quiz, be sure to write in complete sentences, with good organization of paragraphs, and with good grammar and spelling.

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? 
Be prepared to make your case using specific examples from the music we have studied so far in class.

 

2.  Music/Culture/Business

Is it possible to appreciate music without an understanding of the social, cultural, and economic context in which it was created? 
Explain why (or why not) drawing from specific examples with which you are familiar.
