The 5 - 6 pillars of Islam
1: Shahadah |
∙“There is no God but God, and Muhammad is a messenger of God.” |
2: Salat |
∙Five daily prayers: [set prayers are: Fajr (Morning), Zuhr (Noon), Asr (Afternoon), Maghrib (Sunset) and Isha (Night)]∙ in addition to that, Muslims can approach God at any time in du'a (invocation) |
3: Fasting (during month of Ramadan) |
∙no food, drink, or bodily pleasures during daylight hours; pregnant women, travelers, the sick, etc. do not have to fast |
4: Zakat |
∙wealth - tax: 2.5 % of surplus wealth given to orphans, wayfarer, widows, the poor and needy... |
5: Hajj |
∙Once in a lifetime (if financially and physically able) undertaking pilgrimage to the Ka'ba in Mecca during pilgrimage season, performing pilgrimage rituals that reconnect the pilgrim with sacred history |
6: Jihad (struggle) |
∙(Lesser Jihad: armed struggle, usually of the defensive type.∙ Muhammad: “Today we have returned from the lesser Jihad to the Greater Jihad.”)∙ Greater Jihad: struggle against one's own evil inclinations |
